Stories of Cinema at the QVMAG’s Museum at Inveresk
Launceston’s Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery is the largest museum and art gallery in Australia located outside a capital city. It enjoys an enviable reputation and national profile for its collections of Australian colonial art, contemporary craft and design, Tasmanian history and natural sciences. The Museum is located on two sites: the original purpose-built building in Royal Park and the Inveresk site, an exciting and innovative architectural interpretation of a significant 19th century industrial site- the Launceston Railway Workshops. To mark Tasmania’s first major film festival, QVMAG will be mounting Stories of Cinema, showing aspects of the past, present and future of the art of cinema at Inveresk, home of the MyState BOFA Film Festival.

The Past – The Corrick CollectionThe Corrick family was a group of talented musicians and singers who toured the world and settled in Launceston. Their performances included silent film presentations, and Leonard Corrick made many films himself and acquired many more from around the world. This priceless collection of 130 silent films was preserved by Leonard’s son John Corrick at his Launceston home, and is now housed in the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra. Stories of Cinema will show these fi lms for the first time in Tasmania, together with an exhibition of equipment used by the Corrick family. The films are a treasure trove of silent classics, many of them handcoloured, and will be screening daily at the Museum throughout the Film Festival , at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. |
