Save the Tasmanian Devil Program
The Tasmanian Devil is the iconic animal of Tasmania. Known and loved by millions world-wide through its eccentric portrayal in Disney’s Bugs Bunny Show, the devil is a must see when in Tasmania.
Sadly, its very existence is now threatened by the Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD), a rare infectious cancer that is spreading through wild Tasmanian devil populations. The Tasmanian devil has been listed as Endangered by the Federal and State governments, as well as the Red List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). The Tasmanian devil is now wholly protected.
The Australian and Tasmanian Governments have become partners in an initiative, known as the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program, with the mandate to investigate the disease and identify management options.
The Tasmanian Breath of Fresh Air Film Festival has taken the loveable Devil to its heart as the official festival appeal for 2011. A major fund raising dinner is planned with support from committed film industry celebrities who will be attending MyState BOFA 2011. Appeals for funds will be made during the festival.
